Welcome to planet Earth. A place where creatures necessarily have to devour each other to persist in their existence, where pleasure and pain condition behavior, and where natural selection ensures only the most vicious creatures thrive. The phrase “Hell on Earth” comes to mind
Nature manifests as billions of individual creatures, each of which feels it is the center of the universe, exploiting and destroying other creatures in order to survive.
Every sentient creature is primarily driven by its desire to survive. Almost all other desires derive from this single desire.
Pleasure and pain dominate the behaviour of all creatures. When survival prospects are enhanced, a creature experiences pleasure, and when they are diminished it experiences pain.
Pleasure and pain are both absolute and relative. When the body is empowered or diminished a sentient creature will experience pleasure or pain respectively. When other creatures are empowered or diminished a creature will experience a relative diminishing or enhancement of power respectively, resulting in pain or pleasure.
All suffering derives from the desire to exist.
Natural selection ensures that only the strongest and most cunning creatures survive. This process ensures that conflict and suffering can only increase.
It seems likely that man and possibly a few of the higher mammals are the only creatures that experience pleasure and pain. Other creatures are pleasure or pain, depending on their enhanced or diminished survival prospects.
Pleasure and pain are passive states and man alone can deliberately invoke an active state of reasoning to diminish suffering.
We are all slaves of Nature. We are required to sustain ourselves, with all that involves. We can do it passively and swing between pleasure and pain, or we can do it actively and attempt as far as possible to use our reasoning and understanding.
Understanding is the only means of reducing suffering, but while we desire to exist suffering will be a constant companion.
